Statistics can be fun!

We watched this youtube clip and then had a go as a class. We decided to have groups of three because our table groups were too big. We talked about how to work well together before we started. It is amazing how easily the class can be tidied up in 30 seconds.
As groups we had to co-operate and discuss who was doing what. We found out that we are good at collaborating (working together for a joint task).

How can we find out lots of information at once - Mix and Mingle

We wanted to find out lots of information about each other so we used a "Mix and Mingle" tool for a people hunt. Each person had to ask others questions about what they did in the holidays. We found out Nicole went to Australia and Joe went to America. TJ went fishing and he caught a stingray. It was a fun way to learn everybodys names.

Apples were our theme for Enviro day this term.

We had a fantastic day on enviro day. It all started with fabulous weather making gardening a lovely experience. It was really pleasing to see everyone so focussed and checking how our garden had changed from last term.
We had some plants that suffered from the snow and chilly winter weather. That's what happens in gardening. We were able to check for ourselves by breaking stalks to see if there was fresh sap. So we have some bare areas that will need to be planted with new colour for summer. We talked about what sorts of plants would be suitable in that area as it gets full sun in the middle of summer. It was great to see lots of co-operation and tools used correctly.
We are the luckiest school in the world when fantastic families donate things to our school community. Anyone who wanted an apple tree could order one. The Patchings and Harrisons Nursery on Awahuri Road donated and delivered hundreds of trees to our school. People gave a donation and this will be used in our school nursery.
We had 2 well informed Green team and Enviro students (William and Charlotte), come to our class and tell us how to look after our trees once we got them home.

Look at our movies we made. You will hear us singing an apple song we learned too.

As part of our Inquiry unit (How does a community work together?), our class went on the heritage tour to see some of the history around the CBD (Central Business District). We were fortunate to have Helen Worboys from the Feilding Information Centre show us around.

A group of students have been working with Mrs Keen to make movies about what we learned. Each one is different and unique. Well done team!

Visiting His Worship Mayor McKelvie at the Council.

Room K and Room L visited His Worship Mayor McKelvie at the council chambers to find out what the council does for our community. We felt very official as we sat in the council chambers and listened to His Worship Mayor McKelvie explain how the council works. We really appreciated the time that was spent answering our questions. Georgie was able to show us a photo of her dad hanging in the hallway because he is a consellor and attends meetings.

As part of our preparation for our visit to the meet Mayor McKelvie and find out how the council works we had an election in our class.
Our Candidates were: Councillor Milly, Councillor Maggie, Councillor Joey and Councillor Ryanocerus.

After a quick election speech on numerous things the class had a secret vote. The promises of money, lollies , no homework and early finishes had swayed the voters to vote for our new Mayor ( Mayor Ryanocerous). Already he has had to shoot away to his first obligation - chess club. The pressure of being needed all the time is tough.

Wow, what a beautiful surprise to have snow come to Feilding with the polar blast.
Team K used this opportunity to write some similes about the snow.

It falls like crumbling bread crumbs.
It rests on the ground like the white middle of bread.
It felt cold as iceblocks.
The view out my window was stunning like a christmas card.
The snow was white as puffy clouds.
The steps were slippery as newly mopped lino.
or slippery as wearing socks on a smooth floor.
Children were chattering like monkeys in the zoo.
It covered the cars like a fluffy blanket.
The snowflakes falls softly like icing sugar sprinkled on popcorn.
It hugged the trees like frosting on a cake.

At lunchtime, at Manchester Street School some people were chosen to be the rainbow pals! This year they are Hayley.J and Matthew.O. The rainbow pals set up sports for us. They do it so we don't get bored at lunch and for some fun. It last all lunchtime. We get some exercise while playing the sports they have set out.
You can play all sorts of sports like dodge-ball, soccer and ripper rugby. If you get chosen to be one you have to be kind, know the rules of the sports and be sensible.

We would always be sad.
The world would be a sad place.
The world would never change. They would get used to not smiling all the time.
It would make other people upset- feelings are catching.
Their heart would be sad.
The world wouldn't be a good place.
The sun/moon wouldn't smile any more(imagination).
There wouldn't be jokes.
You would get really annoyed about living in a sad world.
There would be no laughter in the world.
The whole universe would be effected.
People wouldn't come outside and play with their friends.
People would cry more often.
After this discussion we then realised how much a smile influences everything we do. It was good to talk about the good things we get from smiling.

Our poem this week is called "Winter's coming".
We used the "What if" thinkers key to help us Think Outside the Box and to be better Divergent thinkers.
What if it was winter all year?

Everyone would need more winter clothes.
There would be no fishing because the water would freeze over.
There would be no trees becuase they would be all used for firewood.
More ships would sink from icebergs.
People would have less money because they would have to buy more things to keep warm ( food, clothing, heating)
Some people who have sensitive skin would have sore hands all the time.
It would be very cold all the time.
There would be no electricity because the wires would freeze or trees with ice would fall onto the wires breaking them.
You get to play in the snow all the time.
Swimming pools could be used for skating rinks.
Lots of people would get the flu and no-one would be at school.
Instead of playing in a sandpit you would play in the snow.
Windows might crack from the extreme cold.
You would go skiing up the mountains more.
There would be more lightning.

simple machines

The whole school has been learning about simple machines. We have been studying simple machines and we have been making simple machines.We have made cogs and marble tracks.The best part was trying it out.The hardest part was the inclined planes.

The book fair

The book fair was in June for two weeks. It closed on Wednesday the 15th of June. Lots of people loved buying the books. You can buy lots of books at the Book Fair. Some of the money goes to our school. $583 worth of books for the school libary.
You can get star wars books and lots of other books like...Phineas and Ferb books and car books.
It is sad that it is now closed.
Alisters favorite book was the klutz book of inventions.
Sols favorite books were all the Geronimo Stilton ones.

Cushion covers!

On Enviro day each and every class made a cushion cover.
Some classes painted the picture that the teachers drew and some classes drew their own pictures. Miss Barber (our student teacher) worked with a small group from our class.
Some kind parents are sewing the covers together and stuffing them. Finally we put on the cover and ... done. They all go to the library.
In my opinion the ones that are painted feel mucccchhhh better. Plus now we have more pillows. yyyaaahhh

BNZ Piggy hunt

Have you seen any strange pigs in town?

Our local BNZ bank has organised a competition to find them. The middle team are out and about in Feilding looking for 10 pink piggys hidden in shop windows. Elmo is trying to get the secret whereabouts of her friends but she is not giving any clues away.

We have until the end of this month to find them.

School Disco

On Wednesday the 8th of June, nearly everybody at Manchester Street School went to our school disco in the school hall. It was a fundraiser for a new sound system in there.There was a great choice of music and food if you got hungry. Everybody had a smile on their face when the lights turned off and the music turned on. Everybody could not stop talking about how the lights changed and how much fun it was dancing!

We noticed on our rulers that you do not start measuring from the end. You need to look for the first line to begin measuring from.

All our rulers had centimetres on one side BUT....on the other side, some had millimetres and some had inches.

Our task today was to practise estimating before we measured an object.

We needed to draw picture of the object we measured and show where we measured it

Sophie T VIP

Sophie is a handy young lady. We learnt lots of interesting things about her.
Her twin brothers, Austin and Blake, were born in Palmerston North hospital.
These are the things you need for making the angel: a magazine, a skewer, a polysterene ball, some decorations and a glue gun to attach them.
She joined St Johns because she had a friend that was interested in it. You are a cadet from 5-7 years old . Then you are a Penguin from 8 years old. That is what Sophie is now.
She chose the 20th of July for her kittens birthday because her dad and brothers are both born on the 20th. However July was just random because that is the month her calendar turned to.

Sharing day

On Thursdays we have sharing day. Team K bring things from home that they would like to share with a buddy in class. Then they move around the class to share with someone else. Any special items are kept in Ms Ellis' office during the day. The things that are brought for sharing are only allowed out at sharing time.

At the final assembly for the term, a few people from our class got some lovely surprises.
Sophie O found it really does pay off to participate in the Imove days. She won a brand new scooter.
Sophie T received a trophy for breaststroke at swimming sports.
Jonty also received a trophy, (The Whittaker Cup), but his was for being the Junior Boys Athletic Champion.
A great way to start the holidays.

ANZAC Poppies

Can you see the different paint techniques we used?
First we painted. We dabbed and used strokes. When we dabbed we had to hold the paint brush on it's metal collar. 2 colours were used for the background.
Next we cut petals from the 3 red strips. This was done quicker by folding a strip into 1/4 s and cuttin gone petal with 4 layers.
After that we had to think carefully about where we placed our poppies before we glued the petals.
Finally we used pastels to add more detail. We drew the center of the poppies and added grass too.

We have been practising drawing living things. We thought carefully how a living thing has a skeleton and how this gives a structure to our creature. After we practised the skeleton we then added detail using a variety of different techniques with pencil. We sketched lightly, outlined with thick lines, coloured solid blocks and lightly shaded.

Congratulations Dylan on presenting your VIP information. After presenting he said he had a scrambled brain from answering all the questions. A lovely clear confident voice and he managed the crowd very well.
Dylan had some funny stories to tell. We found out:

There is a feijoa tree at the bottom of his section that he kept riding his bike into when he first got it.
He had a few candles short on his birthday cake.

Week 9's VIP

This week Hailee is the VIP. She did a fabulous job presenting her photos with clear setting out and captions about the photos. We learned lots of things about Hailee.

Her birthday is the 26th of January.
Her favourite place to hang out is Almadale River.
At Waipu Cove they are purple crabs.
She loves pancakes, maple syrup and berries.
She would love to do horseriding.
She even had them on her birthday cake.

Class garden

We are so proud of our class garden. Our class garden is soooooo big that we now share it with Room G. We weeded, dead headed, trimmed, tidied edges, swept, moved around our concrete korus, planted new plants, encouraged each other and had some great learning.
We learned:
It is important to dead head old flowers so that the plant can put its energy back into the plant, (not into making seeds).
Flint found a geranium that had a lemony smell when you rubbed its leaves between your fingers.
Patrick found all sorts of creatures (red and black ants) living under the concrete edging.
Luke realised you could make a weed castle (imagine a sand castle made of weeds).
Mrs Monteith loved the bunch of lavender we gathered from our trimmings.
Did you know that the smell of lavender can help you sleep? Hopefully we didn't send Mrs Monteith to sleep in the office.

We all worked so hard that we were starving at lunchtime.

The day was a little bit cloudy but that was perfect for gardening because we didn't get sunburnt in the hottest part of the day. So we really deserved our ice block at the end of the day. Even the teachers thoroughly enjoyed them.

Litterless lunches

We had a focus on lunches for this enviro day. We talked about healthy lunches, litterless lunches and how to make sure we are being food safe. Remember to C. C. C.
Chill dairy and meat products.
Cover and separate food items. Reusable bags and containers are great for this.
Clean your hands before you eat and after going to the toilet.
17 out of 21 people in our class had litterless lunches.
Great to see so many people ( and families) making an effort to help save the planet.
It's worth the effort.

One person of our classroom gets the chance to share some interesting things about themselves. They can bring photographs of themselves, their house, their pets, their family and things they like to do. They can also bring special items e.g. music box, special toys, medals or awards.

She has 3 horses (Cinnamon, Windy and Roscoe).
She did ballet for 4 years and now does jazz.
She does horseriding and has lots of ribbons.

So soon after the devastating earthquake in Christchurch, Japan has been hit by a earthquake. Japanese buildings withstood the earthquake quite well. But nobody was prepared for the severity of the enormous tsunami that followed.

Raising money for Canterbury

The whole school showed what we look like when we all get together and do something for other people in need. Everybody dressed in the colours of Canterbury to support those people effected by the earthquake. We all gave $2 each (some families gave even more).
Together we raised $1070. A great effort everybody.

Ethan W brought a dried seahorse to show the class. It was hard for him to answer a lot of the class questions because his nana gave it to him. So Ethan's mum rang nana to ask her some questions. Thanks mum.

Mum took the photographs.
We all got a free t-shirt and I got two spot prizes.
IT WAS FUN! I would definitely do it again.

He went with Kelly to a parade.

He went to Ethan W's birthday party. Ethan wrote a fantastic recount. We know Phayzen went to the party too because we saw Phayzen in one of the many photos. He was about to shoot down the water slide.

In class we are reading not one, but two Andy Griffths books at the same time. I really like books that are made up of short stories.
These books are very very very funny. I recommend them for 7-11 year olds - boys in particular. Read it and you will see why!

We just did our survey on recycling paper in our class and some questions were asked. How does paper get recycled?
This clip is from America and how they do it. We don't get money back, but we do get trees.
We sre really rpoud to share that in our class 20/30 households recycle paper.

Using tables in documents

We are learning to insert tables into word documents.
When could we use them:
to plan homework (time management)
a savings plan
chores
sports team practises
keeping track of pays
PMI

We have also learnt how to make a venn diagram using text boxes, then changing the shape, and making the colour transparent.

Scientists have learnt through experience that it pays to check EVERYTHING.

On January the 28th, 1986 disaster struck the USA when "Challenger" exploded on take-off. It was a devasting day in Americas history. We have to learn from history and make sure we do everything we possibly can to ensure the safety and success of a space flight.
Take a moment to acknowledge the lives that have been sacrificed in the name of science, exploration and humans quest to seek more answers.

This second clip is the shuttle "Columbia" that exploded on reentry back to earth on February the 1st 2003.

Better to be safe than sorry.

Discovery launch has been postponed again for safety reasons. This must be a highly frustrating time for the people involved. The next possible launch time is the 30th of November. I know if I was in the launch to go I would be pleased that every possible safety check is done at least 3 times.

We just watched an interactive video on the ISS from the NASA site. Click on the Inquiry link down the right hand side. Here are some questions we came up with:
What sort of training does it take to go to the space station?
Are you allowed to smoke in space?
What is the ISS for?
How did the runner do in the Boston marathon?
What do they do with their rubbish from the food?
Do they sneeze in space?
How much supplies do they need in space?
How did they bring all the pieces into space to make it?
What sorts of plants are they doing experiments with?

Madeline's crystals

Do you like crystals?
I do, that’s why I decided to show my precious collection for my class presentation. I have been collecting crystals for 2-3 years now and I have about 27 crystals. Now I suppose you want to know what they feel like. Here are a few adjectives that the class came up with: warm, shiny, precious, pointy, polished, mirror-like and sharp.
If you want to collect them here are some of my favourite places; Whirling Rainbow (Foxton) , the crystal fair and Crystal Vision (Foxton).

Have some people got nothing better to do?

We were devasted to come to school on Thursday and find that vandalism had occurred at our school. As you can see by the photos it could have been potentially worse, so in a bizarre way we were relieved. The police were called and two officers promptly came to record and collect evidence as quickly as possible.
During our class discussion we had to keep going back to the evidence and facts so that we kept a clear picture. It is important not to jump to conclusions and start gossip that has no foundation. In these situations it is easy for emotions to overrule our sense of logic.

We used thinking hats to discuss the event.
Facts we know (White hat):
It happened after 9.30pm
A fire was lit at the end of Room K.
Material to build the fire was collected from around the school grounds.
Whoever laid (made) the fire has some experience in making fires.
The fire was not right next to the building.
Both soccer posts were bent and damaged.
Tagging (spraypainting)was on the concrete wall and building.
The Police collected and recorded the evidence.
We are the closest school to Manfield where the fireworks display was on Wednesday night.
Mr Belk had to stop all his other duties to clean it up and get rid of the tagging.
It will cost school money to buy paint and fix the soccer posts.

Thank you to the police for their prompt response and to Mr Belk for the extra time and effort that goes into rectifying the situation.
This situation reminds us to protect what is ours and to respect our property and others right to theirs.
